Aeroseal for Retrofit Duct Sealing

Posted by ARC Insulation August 25th, 2024

According to ENERGY STAR, a typical U.S. home with ductwork loses up to 30% of the conditioned air that passes through the system from leaks. Older homes, or those with faulty duct installations, can be vulnerable to even more loss. Not only can this lead to significant amounts of energy waste and increase your energy bills, but it can affect your comfort and indoor air quality as well.

When it comes to sealing leaks in your home’s duct system, you can trust ARC Insulation. We have over 30 years of experience and offer both traditional methods of duct sealing, like spray foam insulation, as well as Aeroseal.

How Aeroseal Works with Existing Duct Systems

Commonly used for new construction, Aeroseal is a patented and effective method of duct sealing that distributes sealant through your entire system at once. The process is noninvasive and the sealant is nontoxic, making it a great choice for optimal performance. However, a strict process must be followed in existing homes to prevent damage and maximize effectiveness.

  1. Preparation: Aeroseal sticks to anything it touches, so it’s important to properly cover all vents in your home, as well as around HVAC equipment and any exposed ducts.
  2. Pressurization: A fan box is connected to the sealed system with flexible layflat tubing to pressurize the ducts, forcing air out from existing leaks and cracks.
  3. Application: The aerosolized sealant is introduced to the system, which is naturally attracted to leaks when under pressure.
  4. Sealing: The sealant particles accumulate in gaps and cracks to effectively seal them with the process typically taking under 2 hours, depending on the home’s size and initial air leakage rate.
  5. Real-Time Monitoring: Throughout the sealing process our technicians monitor air leakage using specialized software connected to the fan box, ensuring optimal levels of airtightness are achieved. From start to finish, the entire process can take just a few hours, or up to a full day for larger systems.
  6. Cleanup: Aeroseal leaves no residue and dries quickly (under 1 hour). The equipment, and any protective coverings, are taken down.

Benefits of Duct Sealing with Aeroseal

Aeroseal is unmatched in performance and provides a long-lasting solution to several duct-related issues, like excessive dust, poor airflow, strange odors, and mold growth in ducts. While it may be more expensive than other methods of duct sealing, Aeroseal offers several advantages.

  • Superior coverage – Aeroseal automatically seals gaps in your ducts up to ½ inch, which otherwise can be difficult to reach in existing homes.
  • Time efficiency – Most applications can be completed in under a day, though the process may take longer if you combine Aeroseal with AeroBarrier for air sealing other areas in your home.
  • Guaranteed results – We monitor the entire process in real-time, which means our team ensures high standards of duct sealing.
  • Eco-friendly – Aeroseal is a low-VOC product that is safe for indoor use, water-based, and environmentally friendly.
  • Noninvasive – With essential preparations, Aeroseal gives our team access to your entire duct system without causing damage to your existing walls and equipment.
